Starting From a Stop
When starting from a stop under normal conditions, only the electric drive is used for light acceleration, resulting in a gentle, quiet takeoff. To provide maximum acceleration, the electric drive works in combination with the gas engine. In both cases, Lexus Hybrids enjoy immediate torque delivery.
Cruising
While cruising, Lexus Hybrid Drive optimizes output from the electric motor and gasoline engine by allocating power to the drive wheels, as well as to an electric generator, ensuring maximized efficiency.
Accelerating
When extra acceleration is desired, the battery provides added power to the electric drive, resulting in a quiet, smooth and intelligent response. As speed increases, the gas engine serves power in tandem with the Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT), producing serene and effortless acceleration without the jarring shift points experienced in a conventional car.
Braking
When a driver hits the brakes, the Lexus Hybrid Drive system suspends its delivery of drive power and begins generating electricity. Thanks to a highly effective regenerative braking system, kinetic energy usually lost during braking is instead converted to electricity and sent back to the battery.
At a Stop
Unlike traditional gasoline engines, which must idle and consume fuel even at a standstill, a Lexus Hybrid switches off its gas engine when decelerating and at a stop, saving fuel and minimizing emissions. The electric motor remains ready and available for immediate takeoff.
